It covers core topics of biology, physics and chemistry and develops practical skills through researching, planning and performing laboratory investigations.
You might be interested in this qualification if you want to develop key theoretical knowledge and understanding of the subject, but also apply what you learn to different situations, contexts and practical tasks, such as:
- Researching the fundamentals of science
- Planning and performing laboratory investigations
- Researching and undertaking an ecological survey report
- Conducting a forensic crime scene investigation and evidence analysis
- Testing unknown organic and inorganic compounds
The qualification will also help you develop independence and confidence in using skills that are relevant to the sector and that prepare you for progressing to university courses where independent study skills are needed.
The Course is assessed through Three Compulsory Units and Two Optional Units.
Compulsory Units:
- Fundamentals of Science – 90 minute exam. (23% of the course)
- Science in Society – 75 minute exam. (17% of the course)
- Science in Society – Internal Coursework (externally moderated) 23% of the course)
Optional Subjects (Internal Coursework) from:
- Analytical Techniques in Chemistry (18% of the course)
- Environmental Studies (18% of the course)
- Forensic Biology (18% of the course)
- Medical Physics (18% of the course)
The subject-specific knowledge, understanding and skills, and broader transferable skills developed through this qualification, will help you progress to further study in related areas such as:
- Biomedical Science degree
- Allied Health and Nursing degree
