The BTEC Award in Music is perfect for students who are passionate about creating and performing music. Throughout the course, you'll develop key skills in music production, composition, and performance, as well as gain practical knowledge of the music industry. You'll learn to work with different musical styles, enhance your technical abilities, and experiment with technology and instruments. The course emphasises creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork, preparing you for future careers in music and related fields.

This course is ideal for you if you enjoy making music (either performing/producing and/or composing). It also offers a practical introduction to life and work in the music industry. There is an expectation that you perform or produce music, and that you compose/create music throughout the course.

The BTEC Tech Award will give you the opportunity to develop knowledge and technical skills in a practical learning environment. You will develop key skills, ranging from rehearsing to performing, producing to composing and experimenting with technology, equipment and instruments.

You will do this through studying three components. Components One and Two are coursework components completed in Year 10 and Component Three is an examined component completed in Year 11.

Component One – Exploring Music Products and Styles

You will:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of different styles of music
  2. Apply understanding of the techniques to create music
  3. Talk about musical elements, stylistic features and music theory
  4. Perform and compose in a range of different styles.

Assessment of this component

Assessment will be through a Pearson-set assignment where students should create a portfolio and with musical extracts of four musical styles, relevant musical theory and the social and historical background of genres.

You will then create longer musical extracts for two of the styles. Internally assessed and externally moderated.

Component Two – Music Skills Development

You will:

  1. Demonstrate professional and commercial skills for the music industry
  2. Apply development processes for music skills and techniques.

Assessment of this component:

Assessment will be through a Pearson-set assignment where you should create a portfolio of target setting and documenting their improvement in your chosen music skill (performing or producing and composing). This will include written and video evidence. Internally assessed and externally moderated.

Component Three – Responding to a Music Brief

You will:

  1. Demonstrate professional and commercial skills for the music industry
  2. Apply development processes for music skills and techniques
  3. Plan and communicate music skills development
  4. Respond to a brief
  5. Compose in different styles of music.

Assessment in this component:

Assessment will be through an externally-set assignment completed under controlled conditions and marked externally. It will feature a plan, a piece of music (either performance of composition) and an evaluation. You will be assessed on instrumental technique, compositional skills and use of DAW (GarageBand/Logic) which has been present throughout KS3. The skills from Y10 Component One and Two are further re-tested and developed in Component Three.
