Art (Fine Art)

Fine Art at A level will give you the opportunity to improve your artistic skills and develop your creativity. You will experience a wide range of activities in two and three dimensions and be encouraged to develop your own personal style. The creative industries in Britain employ one and a half million people, generating sixty billion pounds each year.
Year 12 Foundation Studies
Students will be introduced to aspects of the course including:
- How to create and effectively use sketchbooks
- Different ways of researching and investigating ideas through drawing, painting, colour studies, photography and note-taking
- Exploring and learning how to handle a range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional media for developing ideas
- Effective ways of exploring critical and contextual materials
- Different ways of responding to the work of others
- Life drawing, portraiture, human form, still life and Architecture You will be encouraged to do this by:
- Developing work based in response to a personal issue, interest or concern
- Developing ideas in response to a set theme
- Taking an interest in current online and live exhibitions, as well as existing Art Galleries independently
Students will be encouraged to recognise and develop their own strengths and interests in the subject and identify and sustain their own lines of enquiry. Students are expected to be self-motivated in order to demonstrate practical and theoretical knowledge and understanding within the subject. The personal investigation requires students to develop work based on an idea, issue, concept or theme leading to a finished outcome or series of finished outcomes. The practical elements should make connections with the work of other artists, designers, craftspeople or photographers and include a piece of written work.
Externally Assessed Assignment (40%)
You will be required to respond to a stimulus, provided by AQA, to produce work which provides evidence of your ability to work independently within specified time constraints, developing a personal and meaningful response which addresses all the assessment objectives and leads to a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes. The exam consists of a 15-hour period of supervised time where students produce the finished outcome.
Fine Art is suited to further courses or employment where ‘what we see matters’. Many students have furthered their studies through a foundation course, usually at Leeds Arts University or Bradford College of Art & Design which has provided excellent preparation for further study or employment.
